Matthew Harmer

After leaving school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I decided to stay at sixth form. After completing a year at sixth form I decided that I wanted the opportunity to gain skills and experience as well as earn a qualification. Getting paid at the same time sold me the apprenticeship, so I started to look at different vacancies.

After looking at all the different apprenticeships that was available to me I came across an apprenticeship at Bath and North East Somerset Council, as an Administration Assistant in the School Admissions and Transport team. I really liked the idea of working for the Council as it sounded like a good opportunity to gain experience and new skills. I also knew business was the area I wanted to study in as this was something I really enjoyed and was interested in.

After working in the School Admissions and Transport Department, I knew an apprenticeship was definitely the right decision for me. I then gained my level 2 NVQ in Business Administration and knew I wanted to keep studying. Luckily for me another apprenticeship became available at Bath and North East Somerset Council in the Human Resources Training team. This apprenticeship was creating ‘e-learning’ and was able to give me even more opportunities. Not only I could study towards a level 3 NVQ in Business Administration, but work with all different kinds of departments at the Council, from Customer Service to Safeguarding and Child Protection. I’ve now been given the opportunity to act up as a Training Administrator for the Council, learning new skills and gain further experiences. I’m even now hoping to go on and complete another Apprenticeship and gain a degree at the same time! Becoming an apprentice has definitely given me more than I would have ever imagined.
